It is unclear who is responsible for the breach, but the hackers told the media that their motive was “hacktivism” and said the Tate’s website was “ridiculously insecure”.

The hackers said they provided the data obtained during the breach to a pair of websites – HaveIBeenPwned, which allows users to track when their personal information has been exposed, and DDoSecets, which publishes hacked documents deemed to be in the public interest.
